Hands down, it is one of my favorite essays by any writer -- it's that good, and I haven't even tried your brownies! I love the story and I love Ina's comment about the thread of connection that occurs while cooking -- you're thinking of your loved one while making a special recipe -- they are thinking of you when eating it. Beautiful.
Love this! I made a version of brownies to support (ensnare) my man, too! I called my mom to ask her what I should make, and she immediately suggested "Hot Fudge Pie," which is basically a chewy intense chocolate brownie baked in a pie pan. 31 years later, I'd say it worked. ;-)
Great writing. And, those brownies look delicious. Over new years Bob recorded the Twilight Series shown on their marathon. We just watched the one you mentioned with Burgess Meredith and I thought about. We must be sending good vibes between us. Happy New Year to you and your family. Can't believe that O is in her second year of college. Love & hugs to all of you.
What a great story. I will remember food as an expression of love the next time I start thinking of the drudgery of making meals every day. I can really picture you standing there in the doorway with your brownies and wondering if you'd done the right thing. Apparently, you did.
Food prep can be drudgery-it's not all brownies and roses over here-but when I think of it, I try to remember that feeding my family is a service of love.
Surgery Update: I can see! The surgery went very well and I am amazed how well I can see now. I had no idea that I was walking around, seeing everything muted. It feels like I am Dorothy, landing in OZ-suddenly everything is in glorious Technicolor!
Sweet story! I love the idea of channeling your thoughts towards the person or family you're cooking for. A book I received, The Kitchen Healer, has this theme. Glad your surgery went well!
Oh my god I love that brownie story so much. I also feel that food is a love language and here you are, winning your husband over with brownies. I also love that your fields of study are so far apart, it just warms my little brownie-loving heart.
I do read a lot of celebrity memoir and I've been on the wait list for this one for a while. I will report back (in several months, probably).

Thanks Kaarin. I'll have to make the brownies for you sometime. Mr. B already ate through all the prop brownies I made for this essay.

We've been together for 31 years too. Brownies are a powerful love potion.

Good vibes received. I'm doing well. I can't believe how much better I can see now.

I'll look for The Kitchen Healer, sounds like something I would like to read!
Good luck Laura!

Yep, my husband and I are definitely an example of opposites attract.
