Love the idea of those old photos. It would also be fun for a writing group to each bring in a photo and then randomly swap for a writing prompt. Love the Laura Ingalls Wilder embroidery. You're so talented. Thanks for this lovely post.

Thanks for the great idea to have your writing group swap photos. My mom and I once bought old photos at an antique store and she gave them to her writer friends with the challenge to write a poem or story about the photo. Wanna trade photos?

We could! Digitally, at least. I don't have many physical photos w/me.

First of all, this: "I feel as though I am spending my days, picking those shards up, turning them over, and deciding if I want to add them to the mosaic that is me at 54." YES ME TOOOOOOO. Wow, does that ever resonate and you said it perfectly.

Second, that photo is great. We had that same linoleum and fridge, and my MIL still has that kind of stool in her house that is right beside the PHONE ON HER WALL WHICH SHE STILL USES REGULARLY. So many great details. And even though you can't see her whole face, by the expression around her mouth she's almost like "Really? You're taking a picture NOW? When I'm in my slippers with a dishtowel apron? Please."

I think everyone had that stool, didn't they? My mom still has my grandmother's-which was nicer than the one in the photo. I'm always amazed by how much of the same things people had in their homes. I wonder-did we just have fewer choices back then? Or are our kids going to talk about the stainless fridges and granite counter tops of their childhoods?

Also I want to join the book club! I'm a bit discombobulated from just getting home last night and having to pour my own coffee, but I shall look into it!

What a lovely post! I’m going to revisit some of my childhood photos with a new eye. I remember that linoleum and we had similar wallpaper.

I am one year behind you - my daughter is graduating from HS in June. This really resonates with me and opens up a new door of possibility: “ Yet, while motherhood most decidedly changed me, I am surprised to find large shards of my 35 year old self, still intact. I feel as though I am spending my days, picking those shards up, turning them over, and deciding if I want to add them to the mosaic that is me at 54.”

Thanks Lisa. Congratulations on your daughter's upcoming graduation. A lot of people mentioned that line resonating with them. It came from my heart so I appreciate the positive feedback.
